13-year vet & single mom turns military benefits into nursing career and Kenzaleah’s Cake Café

Few people know the meaning of sacrifice more than Theresa Mullan. She joined the Army Reserves as a 28-year-old single mother to two small children. The decision allowed Theresa to both serve her country as well as provide a better life for her kids.

Theresa served a combined 13 years in the Army Reserves and Air Force Reserves (she rejoined after 9/11), including tours in the jungle of Honduras as well as Germany. After she left the service, she used her earned education benefits to become a registered nurse, serving where she was most needed across the United States as a travel nurse.

But her dream all along has been to be her own boss and bake for a living. When Theresa’s children were younger, that wasn’t a viable career option. But a year ago, in the middle of the pandemic, the timing just seemed right as she began Kenzaleah’s Cake Café. The name is in homage of her teenage nieces MacKenzie and Aleah (pictured) whom she is currently raising as their guardian.

Theresa soon discovered, even as a Black, veteran-owned business, it isn’t easy as a new operation to find enough orders and customers to fill in the gaps between large events and custom orders. That’s why Market Wagon has been such an ideal fit.

“Market Wagon has been a blessing,” said Theresa. “They opened the door to get my products in front of customers. They did all the legwork and I bake. It’s a win-win!”

Theresa is a licensed home baker in Pennsylvania. Everything at Kenzaleah’s Cake Café is made with quality ingredients. Theresa also promises that customers will notice that everything is baked fresh.

If you’re looking to try something on Market Wagon, you can’t go wrong by ordering a jumbo stuffed Smores chocolate chip cookie. It is Theresa, MacKenzie AND Aleah's absolute favorite. As you can see, each jumbo stuffed cookie is drizzled with chocolate (pictured below). Some of the other flavors include jumbo Reese’s cookies, jumbo Caramel/pretzel cookies and jumbo Brownie cookies.

Another customer bestseller from Kenzaleah’s Cake Café are the homemade oatmeal cream cookies stuffed with a fluffy vanilla marshmallow buttercream. Last, but certainly not least, Theresa recommends her pecan squares which are the perfect blend of sweet and crunchy.

Meanwhile, things have come full circle for Theresa and her military service. Her oldest son is a 16-year veteran and currently serves in Hawaii as an Air Force Captain.
