A crusade started in 1870 by the editor of a small newspaper in Jefferson County, Wisconsin. Editor and owner, W. D. Hoard launched Hoard’s Dairyman magazine, which to this day helps producers serve Americans the highest quality dairy products.
W. D. Hoard was a champion of the dairy cow and soon after launching his magazine, established the Hoard’s Dairyman Farm, just minutes from his publishing office. The Guernsey breed with its rich, nutritious milk would become the farm’s hallmark. The Hoard’s Dairyman Farm still operates today and the family trees of most of the Guernsey cows there reach back to W.D. Hoard’s original herd.
Hoard’s vision would shape the nation’s young dairy industry in ways he never could have imagined in 1899. On today’s Hoard’s Dairyman Farm we use 21st century technology to produce our milk on the same land and with the same passion Hoard carried with him into his barn 120 years ago – a barn that stands to this day.
On his farm and through the pages of his magazine, Hoard became the modern apostle of the dairy cow and the prosperous, soil-conserving form of agriculture dairy farming represented. He would live to be honored nationally and internationally and be cited as the “Father of American Dairying.” Generations after his passing, his profound wisdom continues to be shared in today’s Hoard’s Dairyman magazine.
Now the legacy of W.D. Hoard’s devotion to the dairy cow is celebrated in this very special Hoard’s Dairyman Farm Creamery cheese. It’s made from pure Guernsey milk that comes from the descendants of his original herd, and who still call the Hoard’s Dairyman Farm their home.
