Family Traditions Beef, LLC is all about top quality beef for your dinner table. We know that people want to know more about their food selections and we want to be your trusted source. Our grain-fed angus cattle are sourced from our own herd and fed local grains and forages. We have cared for these cattle since birth, so there's no mystery in their history. Our beef are processed at Memphis Meat Processing in Memphis, IN.
Don and Jennifer Shoemaker live in Vallonia, Indiana with their four children Evan, Graham, Julia and Caroline. Together, they operate Shoemaker Farms.
Jennifer holds degrees from both Franklin College and Indiana Wesleyan Universities. She taught high school math before taking on the challenge of stay-at-home mom in 2013. Don is a proud Boilermaker with a BS from Purdue University and a MBA from Colorado State. He manages the day to day operations of the farm from planting and harvest to livestock care, maintenance, purchasing and marketing. Don and Jennifer are past state committee members for Farm Bureau’s IN Young Farmer program and 2010 Achievement Award recipients.
Shoemaker Farms is a fifth-generation family farm specializing in grains and beef. We produce corn, primarily used for our cattle feed and silage, in addition to popcorn, and seed soybeans. Our cattle operation includes a commercial feedlot in addition to a cow/calf herd where we source feeders for Family Traditions Beef.
We believe in protecting the gifts in our care and actively practice conservation methods that protect soil and water resources including no-till and cover crops. Our farm was honored to receive the Jackson County Soil & Water Conservation Farmer of the Year award in 2017.
Our farm also uses technology to be efficient and do a better job. Soil is sampled regularly and extensively to apply fertilizer only where it is needed. Meanwhile, GPS guides our machines and prevents overlaps of seed and crop protection products. Other technology includes soil moisture probes that alert us when to irrigate crops and sensors that monitor grain to keep it in peak condition.
Many hands make light work. We are fortunate to work along side Don’s parents, Eugene and Barbara while we raise the next generation of young farmers in our family. We look forward to serving you and keeping you up-to-date on farm life.
