Merrill Farms is a small family run farm owned by Lee and Liz Merrill. Lee and Liz both come from farm families and are both at least the 5th generation in their families to be involved with farming. We raise Beef Cattle, corn (mostly to feed the cattle), soybeans and hay. We are passionate about agriculture and most especially about raising quality cattle and premium beef. We have a small herd of registered Beef Shorthorn cows, many of our freezer beef animals come from these cows and are born right here on our farm, the remaining calves are purchased at weaning from neighboring farms and vary in breed including Angus, Hereford, Shorthorn, Simmental and crossbred. We have selected all of these breeds because they excel in carcass quality characteristics such as marbling, flavor and tenderness. Our animals are raised on grass while they are young and out nursing on their moms. We utilize rotational grazing and high quality clover/ grass mix pastures. The cattle spend anywhere from 2-7 days in a section of pasture, then are rotated to a fresh section. At weaning which is usually around 6 months of age they are acclimated to our finishing grain ration which is specially formulated to contain the proper ratio of protein, carbohydrates, and other nutrients and minerals for their needs. We feed a grain finishing ration because this produces premium marbling and flavor in the beef. The cattle also have access to high quality hay that we grow and harvest ourselves and fresh clean water at all times. We are beef quality assurance certified. Our animals are NEVER given any growth hormones, we don't want to eat food with growth hormones and would never expect anyone else to either. All animals are free from antibiotics at the time of processing, however since the welfare and care of our animals is our top priority if they have health issues when they are young they are treated as recommended by our veterinarian with the best possible care and welfare of the animal in mind. If an animal requires medication for health reasons we keep detailed records and withdrawl times are observed. All of our beef is raised by us right here on our farm, we see every animal everyday, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Farming is not just a job for us, it is our livelihood and most importantly our passion and we feel blessed to be able to do this everyday.
